Fink's Significant Learning Outcomes

What is Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning?

Fink's Taxonomy of Significant Learning is a comprehensive framework for evaluating learning experiences in higher education. It extends beyond the acquisition of knowledge to include six key dimensions: Foundational Knowledge, Application, Integration, Human Dimension, Caring, and Learning How to Learn. Each dimension focuses on different aspects of learning, from understanding and applying knowledge to personal and emotional growth, and the development of lifelong learning skills. This taxonomy aims to create a more holistic approach to learning, ensuring that education is not just about memorization, but about fostering a deeper connection to the material and oneself.

Why Use Fink’s Taxonomy?

  • Holistic: It encourages a holistic approach to course design, addressing all six dimensions.
  • Flexible: Faculty appreciate its flexibility because it’s not hierarchical, allowing selective use based on desired learning outcomes.
  • Goes beyond: By focusing on significant learning, it promotes deeper understanding and real-world application.

Impactful Research

Cantalejo JCU, Pardo MI. Fink's integrated course design and taxonomy: The impact of their use in a “Basics of Dental Anatomy” course. J Dent Educ. 2020; 84: 964–973. https://doi.org/10.1002/jdd.12183. The study at Universidad El Bosque showed that incorporating Fink's Integrated Course Design and Taxonomy of Significant Learning (ICD/SL) into the "Basics of Dental Anatomy" course improved student academic performance. This was evidenced by higher percentages of students achieving high to excellent grades and a notable reduction in the course's failure rate when ICD/SL was implemented, compared to when it was not used. The statistical analysis confirmed the positive impact of ICD/SL on student outcomes.
