In collaboration with Lauren McCarthy, Glenna Malcolm, Carla Hass from the Biology Department and Penn State Makers Commons, the Grove Center team helped to develop 3D printed phylogenetic tree kits to address a common challenge in biology education. These kits help students better understand that phylogenetic tree branches can swivel, reflecting evolutionary relationships between species. By enabling hands-on interaction, the kits allow students to explore and construct different tree designs. These models empower students to visualize and manipulate tree structures in ways not possible with traditional illustrations or photographs. Additionally, the kits encourage collaboration and critical thinking, as students work in groups to analyze, create, and submit photographs of their new tree designs.
We printed 48 kits with additional pieces for wear and tear. Each kit, packaged in a durable cardboard box, contains:
- Modular pieces to assemble at least four specific phylogenetic trees
- An instructional one-pager to guide students
